BTRC Enhance at least 4G Speed to 10 Mbps

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has set a new minimal 4G download speed of 10 Mbps, aiming to enhance mobile internet quality nationwide. The decision was taken at the commission’s meeting, standing the previous speed of 7 Mbps set in 2018 and introduces stricter service quality standards for operators.
Officials said, the regulation revised strikes a balance between customer assumption and operators’ capacity. However, the new benchmark falls short of the 15 Mbps standard proposed in the earlier draft of the Quality of Service (QoS) framework,
At the beginning , the QoS framework will extend beyond mobile operators to include National Telecommunication Transmission Network (NTTN) operators and internet service providers (ISPs).
Under this , the minimum 4G upload speed has been set at 2 Mbps, lower than the previously proposed 4 Mbps, but complemented by stronger monitoring measures. Operators have to maintain a call setup success rate of 99% nationwide and at least 98% across the country.
Similarly, call drop rates in 2G networks cannot exceed 1% nationally and 1.5% in upazilas, while 4G connection success must remain above 99% nationwide and 98.5% at district level.
To ensure compliance, the BTRC will conduct regular drive tests to monitor service quality. Operators must gain at least 98% success in voice call setups while keeping call drop rates under 2.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb revealed that, assistant to the chief adviser overseeing telecom and ICT, said the updated benchmarks will bring greater transparency and accountability. He also added that the new framework would help the authorities identify coverage gaps faster and resolve service-related problems more effectively.
