The primary was revealed at a press conference held at the BAPI office in Tejgaon on Tuesday. BAPI Secretary General Zakir Hossain read out a statement highlighting the scale of the damage and its possible impact on the nation’s medicine supply.
According to BAPI’s assessment, raw materials worth nearly Tk 2 billion belonging to the country’s 45 leading pharmaceutical companies were completely destroyed. “The total financial loss will be much higher when we account for damages suffered by other companies,” Zakir said.
He added that the burnt materials included essential components used to produce antibiotics, vaccines, hormones, diabetes, and cancer medicines. The fire also damaged machinery and spare parts, which will take time to replace and import — likely delaying production further.
“This initial estimate could rise as each raw material is linked to the manufacture of multiple finished products,” Zakir warned.
Bangladesh currently has 307 drug manufacturing facilities, with about 250 companies actively producing medicines. To avoid a potential production crisis, BAPI has urged the government to take immediate steps and provide policy support.
The organisation has also submitted 14 specific demands to the government, calling for guidance and assistance to stabilize the sector and ensure the continued supply of essential medicines.
